Morihata Binchotan Charcoal Sticks are made from Ubame oak the time-tested way in its birthplace, the Kishu region of Japan. Since the Edo period, Binchotan charcoal has been made by burning oak branches at extremely high temperatures (2300°F) for several days and then rapidly cooling them. This process of heating and cooling carbonizes the structure of the wood which give it unique qualities as a natural water purifier. Binchotan charcoal has been used as a water purifier in Japan since the 17th century.
