Is Self Tanning Safe? How to look sun-kissed and stay safe throughout the year

Is Self Tanning Safe

Sun Tanning? No thank you!

In a world where every single bit of skin cancer research points out the dangers of prolonged UV exposure it comes as a no surprise that traditional tanning under the sun is out of fashion. Yet the glamour magazines, the red carpet events and popular bloggers all portray perfect glowing sun-kissed skin throughout the year thus making the dilemma ‘to tan or not to tan’ ever more difficult for us to answer.

What about Self Tanning Products? Is Self Tanning Safe?

It seems logical that the indoor self tanning products are currently at their peak of popularity as the result of the above. Indeed, you can get the perfect ‘just after the holiday’ look almost instantly in the comfort of your bathroom without having to expose yourself to any dangers of sun tanning. However, are self tanning products all the same and are they as harmless as the brands’ marketing efforts are trying to make us believe?

Not all are made the same!

Well the answer is no. The conventional tanning lotions are usually packed with parabens and chemical preservatives added to increase the shelf life of the products. These can be just as harmful to our health as prolonged sun exposure. For example, parabens have been linked to cancer, particularly breast cancer as it mimics estrogen in our body. Furthermore, the majority of brands (even including the well-known premium market brands!) prefer to save cost on nourishing agents in their lotions. As a result the colouring agent DHA (dihydroxyacetone), which combines with amino acids in the skin and gives you the desired sun-kissed skin colour, also drives the moisture out from your skin leaving it dry and rough to touch. You exfoliate before applying the tanning solution and then leave the newly exposed gentle skin layer moisturiser-free whilst waiting for the colour to develop. Do it regularly over a period of time and your skin will get the ‘leather-like’ feel not that dissimilar to regular sun tanning.

Thankfully, the recent interest in organic cosmetic industry has resulted in some truly amazing breakthroughs in the field of self tanning as well. Meet LUNA BRONZE, organic and vegan certified range from Australia founded by Madeleine and Rhiannon.
